PROJECT MANAGER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

This position involves end-to-end management of cross-functional Product Development (PD) teams creating innovative new products for internal CDI clients, from concept through PD and Marketing to market launch. The Project Manager ensures project success by aligning Team activity, maintaining focus on the right goals and priorities, developing execution strategies, clearly communicating tasks, schedules, and deliverables, adhering to process, and maintaining a continuous, positive dialogue with the internal customer.

Job Duties:

  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams in complex development projects, serving as the primary interface with stakeholders for deliverables, timelines, priorities and issues regarding the project.
  • Develop project execution strategies that best match the goals and priorities of the internal Customer.
  • Responsible for management of project scope, cost, and time dimensions for multiple concurrent projects.
  • Anticipate project risks/issues and devise creative solutions to mitigate them.
  • Create and maintain project schedules and budgets, monitor project team progress and make adjustments as required.
  • Build and maintain rapport with internal stakeholders through active listening and thoughtful communication.
  • Manage documentation of project artifacts/deliverables including project plans, product backlog, issues lists, status reports, visual tracking boards, design documentation, validation plans and summaries, budget status, etc.
  • Participate in SCRUM kick-offs and daily SCRUM meetings to plan and execute Agile Sprints as well as review project progress on action items and deliverables.
  • Accountable for delivering high quality results in a timely fashion and within budget.
  • Develop product knowledge relevant to assigned projects, including CDI’s products and those of key competitors (i.e. if we are creating new camp furniture products plan to learn about them and contribute to the discussion).

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree relevant to managing creation of Consumer Products (e.g. Business, Marketing or Engineering) is preferred.
  • PMP certification is preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Project Leader/Manager.
  • Has developed and released commercial products as Project Manager.
  • Able to successfully manage multiple project teams simultaneously.
  • Strong relationship building and communication skills.
  • Experience operating in a fast-paced complex engineering environment.
  • Highly adaptable, capable of simultaneously juggling multiple competing project priorities. Able to quickly pivot to a new direction when warranted.
  • Experience working with PD-related disciplines – Marketing, Mechanical Engineering, Soft Goods Design, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, etc.
  • Experience with Lean methodologies as applied in Product Development and Manufacturing.
  • Experience with Agile (SCRUM) Product Development methods as well as “Classic” schedule-driven Project Management.
  • Strong understanding of day-to-day project delivery requirements, issues, needs and risk mitigation.
  • Knowledge and use of project management "Best Practices", methodologies, standards, and tools.
  • Experience with Project management software: AtTask, Microsoft Project, etc.
  • Knowledge of phase-gate product development systems like CDI’s “PDIP” system.
  • Experience working with domestic and overseas vendors.

MACHINIST III

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Sets up, programs and operates conventional and CNC machine tools. Machines and fabricates prototype and production tooling, machine parts, and product models from engineering drawings, informal sketches, and verbal instructions. Fabricates work aids, production and inspection fixtures, components of stamping and forming dies and new product prototypes using conventional and CNC machine shop equipment and practices.

Job Duties:

  • Sets up, programs, and operates CNC and conventional machine tools.
  • Fabricates prototype parts, tooling, fixtures, components of stamping dies, jigs, gauges, and machine parts to drawings and specifications using conventional and CNC machine tools.
  • Supports Product Development by machining prototype parts and tooling. Works on project teams with designers and engineers to help bring product concepts to realization.
  • Maintains, adjusts, and performs basic repairs to tool room equipment.
  • Assists maintenance department in the repair of production machinery and tooling by providing machining and fabrication when needed.
  • Provides technical assistance to other employees working in the shop to assure the safety and efficiency of work methods.
  • Purchases and maintains tools and supplies for CNC mill.
  • Consults with engineers and product designers to assure manufacturability of components and determine best methods.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • 2 year Technical Degree or completion of an equivalent apprenticeship program.
  • 5 years’ experience in a machine shop, development, or maintenance environment. Experience must include set-up, programming, and operation of CNC machine tools.
  • Ability to set-up, program, and operate CNC machine tools.
  • Ability to set up and operate conventional lathes and mills, grinding equipment and other shop tools.
  • Strong MasterCam and SolidWorks skills.
  • Proficiency at reading and interpreting blueprints including those incorporating geometric and positional tolerances.
  • Ability to find solutions to complex machining problems.
  • Ability to accurately estimate time required to complete projects.
  • Welding, fabricating, and mechanical assembly skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with diverse groups of people.
  • Must provide own tools of the trade.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industrial materials and processes used in manufacturing and metalworking.
  • Competency in Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and shifting priorities in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment.

MANUFACTURING ENGINEER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for the design and documentation of high quality manufacturing equipment and tooling. Develops new manufacturing processes and equipment and contributes to the continuous improvement of existing capabilities. Performs administrative functions in support of daily Plant operations including updating Bill of Labors (BOLs) and dispositioning NCRs.

Job Duties:

  • Designs manufacturing equipment and tooling with consideration for quality, safety, performance, cost, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Provides complete component drawings, assembly drawings, electrical diagrams and other documents necessary to build manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Works closely with Plant Managers, Division Directors, and Product Development to ensure that manufacturing equipment developed is effective, safe, and consistent with the strategic needs of the organization.
  • Executes continuous improvement in the plants through lean manufacturing with emphasis on quality, labor and/or ergonomic improvements using lean tools such as DMAIC and OEE.
  • Coordinates New Product Introduction (NPI) process to ensure the successful launch of new products. This includes validation of new processes , procurement of equipment and tooling, and working with planning to ensure adherence to product launch schedule.
  • Initiates and updates BOLs to ensure accuracy of labor data.
  • Works with Quality, Production, Purchasing and Product Development to disposition NCRs.
  • Monitors and reports on adherence to project schedules and budgets.
  • Designs modifications and upgrades to existing equipment and processes..
  • Prepares detailed estimates of equipment and project costs including purchased components, machined and fabricated components, and assembly labor.
  • Evaluates manufacturing processes and makes recommendations when choosing between alternative technologies.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel is required.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • A thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles as they relate to manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of industrial processes including machining, welding, casting, injection molding, tool-making, RF welding, etc.
  • Experience in the selection and application of pneumatic components, industrial heaters and controls, motors, bearings, industrial electrical hardware, power transmission components, etc.
  • Strong CAD skills including 3D modeling and standard drafting practices. Experience with Solidworks preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills. Must be able to approach technical problems methodically and develop, document, and execute effective problem solving plans.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and tools such as DMAIC, OEE, Kaizen, Poke Yoke, Process Mapping, Kanban, FIFO, etc. to use in plant improvement efforts.
  • Familiarity with statistical methods used in process measurement and control.
  • Excellent technical communication skills. Must be able to summarize complex data and present technical information to other engineers and managers.
  • Ability to plan and execute multiple projects concurrently.
  • Previous training or familiarity with the principals of Lean Manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with occupational safety standards including general machine guarding, power press requirements, and ergonomic considerations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.

DESIGN ENGINEER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Ideate, design, analyze, document and support the research, development, testing and introduction of new and improved products.

Job Duties:

  • Design Engineering: Conduct engineering analysis, CAD modeling and drafting, detail design, materials and process studies, materials selection, initial BOM development, cost/benefit analyses, and other duties related to product design engineering. Make, change and check CAD models and drawings. Perform dimensional analyses, check tolerance stack-ups, fits and clearances. Authorize changes and assist in and direct ongoing BOM changes. Develop prototypes, draft patterns and layout recommendations, help define production steps and directions, and help develop initial costing for new and revised products. Interface with customers regarding custom product development. Coordinate design and material changes to increase product profitability and maintain or improve product function and quality. Use field, and user feedback to improve product value and performance.
  • Start-up Support: Follow through on production startup of new products.
  • Product Configuration: Draft and/or direct the development of working drawings, specifications, and other documentation for initial and revised product configurations.
  • Change Management: Coordinate changes to patterns, designs, materials and tooling as needed to support the ECOs. Initiate and check change documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Non-Conforming Material Support: Assist in resolving NCR issues as required.
  • Product Testing: Plan, execute/monitor, and support product performance verification testing (lab and field) of designs during the concept development and detail design phases of development.
  • Intellectual Property: Assist in patent applications and reviews and trademark searches.
  • Design Documentation: Document and maintain necessary design and development notebooks, checklists, etc. for the products and projects assigned.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • B.S. in Engineering is required, Mechanical or design engineering focus is preferred. Active association and involvement in the field and professional registration is encouraged.
  • At least four years of progressive design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Experience in coordinating and supporting multiple, parallel development projects is preferred. Experience in the specialty outdoor sporting goods industry is preferred. Background in industrial design, materials science, textiles, plastics, and/or light assembly/manufacturing is preferred. Recent experience and current activity in human-powered, backcountry and paddling activities is recommended.
  • Demonstrated ability to engineer and develop new products in a manufacturing environment.
  • Skilled in all aspects of design engineering support to product development.
  • The ability to effectively communicate ideas and information while maintaining smooth, cooperative relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills.
  • Competent in math and statistics.
  • Prefer experience with Solidworks CAD program, MS Project and PowerPoint, and finite element modeling programs.
  • Sound decision-making and proven problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledgeable regarding materials and processes appropriate for the product lines.

SEASONAL MECHANIC TECHNICIAN

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Serves as production maintenance with a focus on producing a quality product to schedule. Constructs, maintains and tests mechanical equipment, machinery and components. Identifies parts or machines that need new parts or need to be replaced and places orders as necessary. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and /or formal training in area of specialty. Requires 2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. May be familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within a given field. Is able to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
