DESIGN ENGINEER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Ideate, design, document and support the research, development, testing and introduction of new and improved products.

Job Duties:
  • Design: Perform engineering analysis, CAD modeling and drafting, detail design, materials and process studies, materials selection, initial BOM development, cost/benefit analyses, and other duties related to product engineering design. Make, and change CAD models and drawings. Perform dimensional analyses, check tolerance stack-ups, fits and clearances. Authorize changes and assist in and direct ongoing BOM changes. Develop prototypes, draft patterns and layout recommendations, help define production steps and directions, and help develop initial costing for new and revised products. Interface with customers regarding custom product development. Coordinate design and material changes to increase product profitability and maintain or improve product function and quality. Use field, and user feedback to improve product value and performance.
  • Start-up Support: Follow through on production startup of new products. This includes assisting training of in-house production supervisors prior to and including pilot runs, expediting resolution of problems incurred during new production starts, and on-site quality supervision during development and start-up of off-shore contractors.
  • Product Testing: Plan, execute/monitor, and support product performance verification testing (lab and field) of candidate designs during the concept development and detail design phases of development.
  • Product Configuration: Draft and/or direct the development of working drawings, specifications, and other documentation for initial and revised product configurations. Work closely with Operations and QA managers to resolve manufacturing issues while upholding company standards. Set standards, define key inspection points and work with QA to create product specifications (visual and written) and standards. Initiate and coordinate subsequent changes using established ECO procedures.
  • Project Management: Conduct the planning, execution and monitoring of schedules and budgets for major design engineering projects.
  • Change Management: Coordinate changes to patterns, designs, materials and tooling as needed to support the ECO’s. Initiate and check change documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Technical Support: Support Military Sales personnel with design and performance information as requested. Provide tech support to trade shows, regional shows, reps, distributors, product clinics, and field promotions as necessary.
  • Intellectual Property: Assist in patent applications and reviews and trademark searches.
Education, Skills and Abilities:
  • Education/Certifications: Four or more year mechanical or design engineering degree preferred. Four year technical degree required.
  • A minimum of two years of progressive design experience in a manufacturing environment is required. Experience in coordinating and supporting multiple, parallel development projects is preferred. Experience in the specialty outdoor sporting goods industry is preferred. Background in industrial design, materials science, textiles, plastics, art, and/or light assembly/manufacturing is helpful.
  • Demonstrated ability to engineer and develop new products in a manufacturing environment. Skilled in all aspects of design engineering support to product development. Able to work with other creative and technical staff. Knowledgeable regarding materials and processes appropriate for the product lines. Ability to handle multiple projects in a dynamic, sometimes chaotic environment is expected. Must be comfortable working with and resolving conflicting priorities in the achievement of multiple, concurrent goals. Sound decision-making and proven problem-solving skills. Able to effectively communicate ideas and information while maintaining smooth, cooperative relationships. Excellent verbal and written English skills. Good interpersonal skills. Proficiency with SolidWorks, spreadsheets, word processing, and e-mail. Prefer experience with MS Project, finite element analysis programs, and PowerPoint.

MANUFACTURING ENGINEER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for the design and documentation of high quality manufacturing equipment and tooling. Develops new manufacturing processes and equipment and contributes to the continuous improvement of existing capabilities. Performs administrative functions in support of daily Plant operations including updating Bill of Labors (BOLs) and dispositioning NCRs.

Job Duties:
  • Designs manufacturing equipment and tooling with consideration for quality, safety, performance, cost, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Provides complete component drawings, assembly drawings, electrical diagrams and other documents necessary to build manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Works closely with Plant Managers, Division Directors, and Product Development to ensure that manufacturing equipment developed is effective, safe, and consistent with the strategic needs of the organization.
  • Executes continuous improvement in the plants through lean manufacturing with emphasis on quality, labor and/or ergonomic improvements using lean tools such as DMAIC and OEE.
  • Coordinates New Product Introduction (NPI) process to ensure the successful launch of new products. This includes validation of new processes , procurement of equipment and tooling, and working with planning to ensure adherence to product launch schedule.
  • Initiates and updates BOLs to ensure accuracy of labor data.
  • Works with Quality, Production, Purchasing and Product Development to disposition NCRs.
  • Monitors and reports on adherence to project schedules and budgets.
  • Designs modifications and upgrades to existing equipment and processes.
  • Prepares detailed estimates of equipment and project costs including purchased components, machined and fabricated components, and assembly labor.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel is required.
Education, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • A thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles as they relate to manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of industrial processes including machining, welding, casting, injection molding, tool-making, RF welding, etc.
  • Experience in the selection and application of pneumatic components, industrial heaters and controls, motors, bearings, industrial electrical hardware, power transmission components, etc.
  • Strong CAD skills including 3D modeling and standard drafting practices. Experience with Solidworks preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills. Must be able to approach technical problems methodically and develop, document, and execute effective problem solving plans.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and tools such as DMAIC, OEE, Kaizen, Poke Yoke, Process Mapping, Kanban, FIFO, etc to use in plant improvement efforts.
  • Familiarity with occupational safety standards including general machine guarding, power press requirements, and ergonomic considerations.
  • Previous training or familiarity with the principals of Lean Manufacturing.
