BRAND DIRECTOR- SEALLINE/ECASE/PACKTOWL

General Summary of Responsibilities:

The Brand Director is the business leader for the SealLine, Ecase, and Packtowl brands. S(he) is the global brand steward, and is directly accountable for growing market share and profitability in the US, Canada, and PacRim. This is achieved through a deep understanding of market opportunities, and the effective development of products and programs to maximize them. Product innovation will be emphasized as a key component of success, along with sales channel expansion. The position will lead collaboration across all resources in the organization to achieve results in a highly competitive and fast changing environment.

Job Duties:

  • Fully understand the end consumer and the activities they engage in; monitor market trends and competitor activity. Actively use this information to guide key decisions.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate a rolling Three Year Strategic Plan for each brand, subject to the Business Unit strategic plan and in alignment with other Business Units. Includes market position/share and corresponding financial plan.
  • Identify new product and/or new market opportunities, develop business case, and establish go-to-market plans (positioning, product, pricing, distribution, and marketing communications).
  • Lead cross-functional team in the efficient execution of these plans. Achieve annual market share and profitability targets. Includes establishing and managing goals for revenue, gross margin, and product development/marketing investment. Achieve investment project commitments, including project cost, schedule, ROI. Review and approve partner (EU and New Markets) Business Unit strategies for alignment with global brand strategy. Consult on partner Business Unit tactics.
  • Achieve periodic breakthrough product innovations that enhance the reputation of the brands and of the corporation. Also periodically identify and submit for consideration new business areas for the corporation, either within, adjacent to, or unrelated to the assigned brands.
  • Monitor the performance of the brand as a whole and initiate / take corrective action as required to preserve value or take opportunity. Includes periodic review of brand health; product assortment and pricing; and product development, operations, sales, and marketing quality.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • 8 - 10 years’ experience in a brand or product management role pertaining to consumer products, preferably in the outdoor industry.
  • User specific expert in paddling, commuter/urban, and backpacking.
  • Deep passion for product technologies and innovation.
  • Degree or equivalent in Business, Marketing, or Engineering.
  • Proven experience developing effective strategic plans.

AUTOMATED EQUIPMENT ENGINEER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for the design and documentation of high quality automated manufacturing equipment and tooling. The scope of this work includes mechanical and electrical design, component selection, control system design, and PLC programming. Develops new manufacturing processes and equipment and contributes to the continuous improvement of existing capabilities. Works closely with Plant Managers and Division Directors to assure that manufacturing equipment meets the needs of the organization.

Job Duties:

  • Designs automated manufacturing equipment and tooling with consideration for quality, performance, cost, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Provides complete component drawings, assembly drawings, electrical diagrams and other documents necessary to build manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Works closely with Plant Managers, Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance, Division Directors, and Product Development to ensure that manufacturing equipment developed is effective, safe, and consistent with the strategic needs of the organization.
  • Monitors and reports on adherence to project schedules and budgets.
  • Designs modifications and upgrades to existing equipment and processes.
  • Prepares detailed estimates of equipment and project costs including purchased components, machined and fabricated components, and assembly labor.
  • Evaluates manufacturing processes and makes recommendations when choosing between alternative technologies.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel is required.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in a diverse manufacturing environment.
  • A thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles as they relate to automated manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of industrial processes including machining, welding, casting, injection molding, tool-making, RF welding, etc.
  • Experience in the selection and application of pneumatic components, industrial heaters and controls, motors, bearings, industrial electrical hardware, power transmission components, etc.
  • Strong CAD skills including 3D modeling and standard drafting practices. Experience with Solidworks preferred.
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) including programming and debugging.
  • Strong analytical skills. Must be able to approach technical problems methodically and develop, document, and execute effective problem solving plans.
  • Excellent technical communication skills. Must be able to summarize complex data and present technical information to other engineers and managers.
  • Ability to plan and execute multiple projects concurrently.
  • Previous training or familiarity with the principals of Lean Manufacturing a plus.
  • Familiarity with occupational safety standards including general machine guarding, power press requirements, and ergonomic considerations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.

SENIOR COST ACCOUNTANT

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for the proper valuation of inventory and cost of goods sold and the dissemination of relevant weekly, monthly and annual reports to key operation personnel within the Seattle facility. Key contact for daily operation issues including Information Technology, Receivables, Payables, Operations, Accounting and Business Units.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the proper valuation of inventory for Seattle & Reno facilities. This involves daily and monthly review of all aspects of manufacturing accounting including standard cost development and resulting manufacturing and purchasing variances. Daily communication with operations is required to explain and resolve issues.
  • Responsible for directing operational month and year end processes. Responsible for meeting month end deadlines and conducting various analysis including obsolescence, work order variances and inventory reconciliation. Also, responsible for proper overhead allocation, various one off month end issues.
  • Instrumental in the company budgeting and inventory valuation process. Work with all disciplines in Seattle & Reno facilities to set proper standard costs to facilitate proper valuation for budgeting. A preliminary budget is created in fall for upcoming year and finalized in fall. Separate costing budgeting/analysis are conducted for winter and medical products.
  • Daily work with operations, accounting, information technology, business units and Ireland to resolve various issues and facilitate proper resolutions.
  • Key contact for the year end audit. Provide multiple prepared by client schedules and perform multiple analysis to assist the audit.
  • Complete and provide several schedules to multiple sources throughout the course of a year. This includes federal and state Schedule 263A.
  • Provide various weekly reports to operations including direct labor, purchase price variance and cost of quality. Work with operations to research and resolve various issues from these reports.
  • Coordinate transfer pricing, calculate TTI and develop the annual price book.
  • Work with CFO and Financial Controller on projects on an as needed basis.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • BA or BS degree required.
  • CPA/CMA required.
  • Five to eight years of accounting experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of GAAP regulations.
  • Must have knowledge of standard cost systems.
  • Must be able to work with employees in all disciplines in Seattle, Reno and Ireland facilities.
  • Must be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Detailed oriented and analytical.
  • Must be flexible to meet deadlines and overtime is required during budgeting, pricing and month/year end times.

DESIGN ENGINEER

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Ideate, design, analyze, document and support the research, development, testing and introduction of new and improved products.

Job Duties:

  • Project Planning: Platypus, SealLine, Packtowl, Ecase, Hummingbird.
  • Design Engineering: Conduct engineering analysis, CAD modeling and drafting, detail design, materials and process studies, materials selection, initial BOM development, cost/benefit analyses, and other duties related to product design engineering. Make, change and check CAD models and drawings. Perform dimensional analyses, check tolerance stack-ups, fits and clearances. Authorize changes and assist in and direct ongoing BOM changes. Develop prototypes, draft patterns and layout recommendations, help define production steps and directions, and help develop initial costing for new and revised products. Interface with customers regarding custom product development. Coordinate design and material changes to increase product profitability and maintain or improve product function and quality. Use field, and user feedback to improve product value and performance.
  • Start-up Support: Follow through on production startup of new products. This includes assisting training of in-house production supervisors prior to and including pilot runs, expediting resolution of problems incurred during new production starts, and on-site quality supervision during development and start-up of off-shore contractors.
  • Product Configuration: Draft and/or direct the development of working drawings, specifications, and other documentation for initial and revised product configurations. Work closely with Operations and QA managers to resolve manufacturing issues while upholding company standards. Set standards, define key inspection points and work with PGMs and QA to create product specifications (visual and written) and standards.
  • Change Management: Coordinate changes to patterns, designs, materials and tooling as needed to support the ECOs. Initiate and check change documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Project Leadership & Coordination- Lead and influence cross-functional teams in the effective execution of above projects to meet stated objectives; Review, provide feedback on, and approve creative; Coordinate timelines and budgets to ensure adherence to plan;Track campaign metrics, analyze project results, and report back to team quarterly.
  • Non-Conforming Material Support: Assist in resolving NCR issues as required.
  • Product Testing: Plan, execute/monitor, and support product performance verification testing (lab and field) of designs during the concept development and detail design phases of development.
  • Intellectual Property: Assist in patent applications and reviews and trademark searches.
  • Design Documentation: Document and maintain necessary design and development notebooks, checklists, etc. for the products and projects assigned. Maintain accurate project files.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • Education/Certifications: B.S. in Engineering is required, Mechanical or design engineering focus is preferred. Active association and involvement in the field and professional registration is encouraged.
  • Experience: At least four years of progressive design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Experience in coordinating and supporting multiple, parallel development projects is preferred. Experience in the specialty outdoor sporting goods industry is preferred. Background in industrial design, materials science, textiles, plastics, and/or light assembly/manufacturing is preferred. Recent experience and current activity in human-powered, backcountry and paddling activities is recommended.
  • Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to engineer and develop new products in a manufacturing environment. Skilled in all aspects of design engineering support to product development. Knowledgeable regarding materials and processes appropriate for the product lines. Ability to handle multiple projects in a dynamic, sometimes chaotic environment is expected. Sound decision-making and proven problem-solving skills. The ability to effectively communicate ideas and information while maintaining smooth, cooperative relationships. Excellent verbal and written English skills. Competent in math and statistics. Good interpersonal skills. Proficiency with PCs, spreadsheets, word processing and e-mail. Prefer experience with Solidworks CAD program, MS Project and PowerPoint, and finite element modeling programs.

SEASONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE

General Summary of Responsibilities:

To provide customer service, warranty, repair, and technical information to consumers and dealers who contact the company by the 800 lines, web-site or e-mail, and/or, walk into the factory.

Job Duties:

  • Act as initial contact for consumer/retailer support with immediate response to the 800 consumer line and email communication and provide technical repair and warranty question support. Provide resolution to customer conflict with a professional and technically adept manner.
  • Monitor and manage the use of CDI Repair Program/Data entry program.
  • Maintain working relationships with Project Managers, Product Specialists, R& D, Marketing and all internal CDI customers to ensure that lines of communication are open for all product issues and information. Work closely with QA & Product managers concerning product failures and consumer inquiries.
  • Cross train within the Warranty and Repair Department to gain an understanding of all aspects of the position and fill in when necessary.
  • Responsible for organizing, restocking and managing small parts inventory. Ship replacement parts to consumers and dealers as needed with same day action.
  • Support Sales, Reps, and Dealer Service Reps as well as International Distributors with technical, warranty and repair information, and small parts.

Education, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English.
  • Pleasant, courteous and efficient telephone manner.
  • Ability to have excellent customer service approach.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of dealers, reps, and consumers on a wide range of issues.
